The W.E. Smith Charitable Trust has awarded nearly $64,000 in grant funding to two dozen local history initiatives in southwest Ohio.

The trust, established in 1997 by Oxford resident Ophia Smith in honor of her husband, W.E. Smith, provides funding for history-related projects twice a year. This summer’s funding is on par with last year’s but is going to 24 organizations, up from 20 last year.

Enjoy Oxford received funding this summer for exhibits related to historic walking tours in Oxford. The McGuffey Museum at Miami University received funding to catalog and evaluate the conditions of its collection of books, and the Oxford Museum Association got a grant to support work on the Pioneer Farm Bank.

The Smith Library of Regional History received funding to continue digitizing its collection. The Library also received a grant in partnership with the Nuxhall Foundation to digitize and preserve materials about the life of Joe Nuxhall.

The Reily Township Historical Society and the Butler County Historical Society each received grants, as well.

Other recipients outside of the Oxford area included multiple historical societies, MetroParks of Butler County, Middletown’s Atrium Medical Center and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Cincinnati. The trust awarded a total of $63,975 and does not report individual grant amounts.

The next grant application deadline is Oct. 15, and applications can be found at the Smith Library of Regional History or the Cummins History Room in Hamilton Lane Library.
