The Oxford League of Women Voters has earned statewide recognition for its voter outreach efforts in 2024.

The League of Women Voters of Ohio awarded the Oxford chapter with the Harriet Taylor Upton Voter Outreach Award this year during a May 17 gala. The award “honors a local League that has gone above and beyond in empowering voters and elevating civic participation in their community,” according to a press release.

The Oxford chapter distributed more than 10,000 copies of its Voter Information Guide in 2024 and helped people register to vote through a variety of events. The chapter’s efforts were especially effective at reaching more than 8,000 Miami University students with posters, welcome packet fliers, videos and partnerships with university organizations including Associated Student Government. “Their work has set a new standard for campus engagement in Ohio,” the press release states, “serving as a model for Leagues in college towns across the state.”

Harriet Taylor Upton, the namesake of the award, was an Ohio women’s suffrage activist born in 1853. She was active in the national women’s suffrage movement beginning in the 1890s and was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 1981, according to the Trumble County Historical Society.
