Talawanda boys tennis kept its grip on first place in the Southwestern Buckeye League (SWBL) Southwestern Division on April 21 with a 5-0 sweep of Monroe High School.
Despite the shutout, the Brave had to fight hard, especially in first doubles, where Talawanda senior pair Ari Delvecchio and captain Connor Pulaski faced an early battle.
After dropping the opening game, Talawanda fought back. The pair quickly faced adversity again when Delvecchio fell behind love-40 on serve in the second game. He responded with two consecutive aces, regaining momentum and helping secure the first set, 6-2.
“I try my best not to think about the score because it stresses me out,” Delvecchio said. “When I overthink, that’s when mistakes happen.”
The second set presented a similar challenge, with Monroe building an early 2-1 lead. The pair showed no concern playing from behind, gradually gaining control and ultimately taking the set, 7-5. The duo credited their success to enjoying themselves on the court.
“I just try and have fun. That’s always my goal, no matter the match,” Pulaski said.
The team victory over the Monroe Hornets also featured wins in first, second and third singles. The sweep improved Talawanda’s record in the SWBL to 3-0 and 8-3 overall.
As Talawanda heads into the second half of its season, head coach Nate Silberstein says his confidence in the team continues to grow.
“Ecstatic, awesome. It’s a real testament to these guys,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Talawanda travels to Fenwick High School for its next match on April 23.
