Miles for MOON: How one shopper is giving back
Last year, Uriah Bisson ran 100 miles, but this year he said he hopes to run “as far as possible” to raise money and awareness for MOON Co-op.
A local resident, Uriah Bisson, is running a Backyard Ultra race to raise funds for MOON Co-op. The fundraiser will also include a community run at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 at the Co-op, which will be an informal event designed to bring community members together.
This will be Uriah Bisson’s second year running the Backyard Ultra, a race in which participants run a 4.167-mile loop every hour. The race continues through the day, or sometimes multiple days, until only one runner remains. Last year, Uriah Bisson ran 100 miles, but this year he said he hopes to run “as far as possible” to raise money and awareness for the Co-op.
Donors can give a one-time donation of any amount, or they can put their name in a pool and pre-commit to donating $50 if their name is drawn. One name will be drawn from the pool after every loop Uriah Bisson completes during his Backyard Ultra. The 5th Annual Prairie on Fire Backyard Ultra will take place on Sept. 12 in Noblesville, Indiana.
To share their appreciation for the Co-op and help gather people together, the Bisson family is organizing Miles for MOON, a community run, on Aug. 8. The run will begin at the Co-op where participants can run or walk the 3-mile course. Afterward, food and drinks will be provided. No registration is necessary to attend the event.
“We want to make sure that everybody’s included, that nobody’s left behind,” Janice Bisson, Uriah’s wife, who helped to organize the fundraiser, said.
The Bisson family has shopped frequently at the Co-op for the past several years and is friends with many of its staff members. Uriah Bisson said when their son had his birthday in February, he told his parents he wanted to have it at the Co-op. The Bisson’s brought a cake to celebrate, and members of the staff sang happy birthday.
“Every time we come here, our kids are greeted by name,” Janice Bisson said. “They’re always just so friendly here. You don’t get that in a lot of places anymore.”
Donations to the Miles for MOON Co-op fundraiser can be made at givebutter.com. All proceeds from Backyard Ultra and Miles for MOON will go to MOON Co-op.
