Obituary: Howell C. Lloyd
Howell was known for his curiosity about the world and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Howell Clevenger Lloyd, Professor Emeritus of Miami University, passed away peacefully on Aug. 13, 2026, in Oxford, Ohio.
He was born on Nov. 10, 1937, in Lima, Ohio, to I. Peris Lloyd and Gwendolen (Clevenger) Lloyd.
A gifted scholar from an early age, Howell graduated magna cum laude from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1959. He continued his academic pursuits at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, earning a master of arts degree in 1961 and a Ph.D. in 1964.
In 1963, Howell joined the faculty of the Department of Geography at Miami University. Over a distinguished 43-year career, he inspired generations of students through his teaching, mentorship and passion for international education. He served as Director of the International Studies Program from 1973-86 and taught at Miami University's European Center in Luxembourg, where he lived for a total of four and a half years.
Upon his retirement in 2006, he was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. Beyond his professional accomplishments. Howell was known for his curiosity about the world and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures. He cherished traveling, sharing a good glass of wine with friends and exploring the history of trains, trams and trolleys.
His enthusiasm for learning and adventure enriched the lives of all who knew him. Howell shared a loving marriage of 55 years with his wife, Melani A. M. Overgaauw, whom he married in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1971. Together they built a life filled with travel, friendship and family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Melani; his daughter, Gwendolen H. L. Lloyd; his sister, Rebecca "Becky" Thomas; and his niece and nephew, Megan Thomas and David Thomas.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a beloved brother and uncle, a dedicated educator and a lifelong student of the world. His wisdom, kindness and enthusiasm for discovery will be greatly missed.
