Obituary: Philip Karl Welty
Philip Karl Welty passed away peacefully at the Knolls of Oxford on the afternoon of Sept. 20, 2026.
Born on March 13, 1934, in Hicksville, Ohio, to the late Robert and Marion (Sprow) Welty, Philip was a dedicated scholar who earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He spent many fulfilling years as a chemistry professor at Miami University and then Edgewood College/University, where he inspired countless students and colleagues. Beyond his academic accomplishments, Philip had a passion for music. He was a member of the Southern Gateway Chorus(Barbershop), finding joy and connection through harmony. Philip is survived by his devoted wife Marvelle (Smith) Welty, with whom he shared 72 beautiful years of marriage.
He is also survived by his children Tamara Kinne, Michael (Nancy) Welty, Lynne (Benjamin) Mattox; grandchildren Tony (Andy) Kinne, Cecy Kinne (Kevin Whelan), Thomas (Meredith) Kinne, Bridget (Nick) Sigafoose, Andrea (Michael) Wolfe, Aaron (Katie) Welty, Alex (Sara) Welty, Amanda Mattox, Rachel Mattox ;14 great-grandchildren, sister, Sheila Bruns, and sister-in-law, Joy Welty.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law, Michael Kinne and his siblings Carol Fox and Alan Welty.
