Obituary: Robert Bornstein
Dr. Robert “Bob” Bornstein of Oxford, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Sophie and Ben Bornstein, Bob earned his undergraduate degree at Emory University and his Ph.D. at the University of Louisville. He went on to dedicate his professional life to education as a professor of psychology at Miami University. He was either your favorite or your least favorite professor, thanks to his notoriously challenging and thought-provoking courses.
Outside the classroom, Bob loved tending to his award-winning garden, watching just about any sport (especially his beloved Dodgers), fishing, spending time at the beach, and most of all, being with his family. Many will fondly remember his unique and nuanced approach to coaching T-ball, which left a lasting impression on players and parents alike. He found joy in the simple things in life and would often pause to take note of a seemingly ordinary moment. Nothing was too small for Bob to appreciate. He always saw the best in people and offered them grace, understanding that life can take any of us in many different directions.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Phillips; his children, Robert, Pawley (Stacey), Noah (Amanda Greenberg), Anna (Matt) Wilcher and Joshua (Caroline); and his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob’s family is grateful for all the wonderful years they shared with him and takes comfort in knowing his soul is now free.
In keeping with his wishes, Bob’s body was donated to science. A celebration of his life will be planned and details will be shared with friends and family once arrangements are finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to two organizations Bob cared deeply about: Amnesty International and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Liberty Place Memory Care for the care they gave Bob during the last year of his life.
