Obituary: William "Bill" Smith
William “Bill” Smith, 79, of Darrtown, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on Jan. 13, 1947, Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose laughter, kindness and generous heart touched everyone who knew him.
Bill shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Melodie Smith. Together they built a family that was the center of his world. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Yvonne (Larry) Miedema, Johnny (Deanna) Smith and Tammy (Robert) Simpson.
He was a proud grandfather to Brenton, Amber (Brandon), Courtney (Derek), Cacey, Robert, Miklaye (Brandon), Klayton (Jersey), MaryJane and Jayson; and a cherished great-grandfather to Nevaeh, Ayden, Liliana, Liam, Gavin, Bella, Weston and Waylon; and the keeper of his garden, “TomCat” Bill is also survived by his sisters Sylvia, Sandy and Cindy, as well as numerous other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Lillian Smith; siblings, Jean, Tommy, Gary and his beloved grandchildren, Derrick Jones, 1LT Alexis Vega; and also his faithful four-legged companion Toby Dog. Anyone who knew Bill knew how deeply he loved his family. He found his greatest happiness in the simple moments spent with the people he loved most. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, tending to his garden, sharing stories, making people laugh and helping others whenever he could. Bill had a way of making everyone feel welcome and the memories and stories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
